ABOUT DIONNE
After many years as a biomedical scientist I decided that I needed to broaden my horizons and take a new direction preferably one where I was able to input more and see changes. I knew that I wanted more interaction with people but I also knew that I wasn’t really looking to be their boss. I did consider teaching but then decided against it as the client group seemed to be a bit unreceptive to learning.
Then like magic I thought "What about teaching adults a not so academic subject but something more relaxed and fun?" Although from being a child I'd always been sporty, somehow I had never really considered something like becoming a physical education teacher. Anyway, as a regular gym goer, someone there suggested that I go to the YMCA and see what courses they have on offer. One course led to another, each with their own challenges and obstacles which resulted in aiding my learning. The role of a personal trainer suits me as within that persona I am able to be a friend, a teacher, a coach and for some even a mentor. I see changes, I see improvement, I see effort, I see determination and that’s what makes me happy.
Many of my qualifications I have obtained with the YMCA are via the personal trainer route. In addition to that because of my experience with clients requirements, I have also undergone training with specialist populations. I have just completed the Wright Foundation GP Exercise Referral Course. This qualification allows me to deliver an exercise programme to people who carry conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and respiratory disorders to mention but a few. Other courses I have undertaken include the Pilates Institute's Group Matwork Fundamentals, and the Certificate of Professional Practice in Mentoring completed at Goldsmiths University. In addition to that I also hold a BSc Honours degree in Life Sciences. Because the health and fitness industry is always changing I am continually updating my qualifications and am always planning workshops and conferences to attend throughout the year. I am also a member of the Register of Exercise Professionals.
The bulk of my work revolves around my personal training clients. In addition I take classes at various venues namely the Red Onion Dance Studios where I teach a discipline called supple strength and a Yoga Pilates fusion class starting from 5th January 2005.
Furthermore I am also a part time GP referral instructor with Fusion (Southwark Community Leisure Limited).
